Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Hoffman Family Scholarship Fund

The Hoffman Family Scholarship Fund was established in August 2014 by Brian Hoffman '69, '84. An Akron native, Brian D. Hoffman was the last of three consecutive generations in his family attending and graduating from the original Buchtel College and today's The University of Akron. The first connection with Mr. Hoffman's family and the University began with his grandmother Catherine Blanchard (Joy) whose uncle was Augustus B. Church, the 7th President of Buchtel College. Since then, there have been seven family members who attended or graduated from Buchtel College and The University of Akron.

Mr. Hoffman graduated with a B.S. in accounting and an A.A.B. in data processing. He spent more than 30 years of his career in the banking industry as an auditor, accountant, financial analyst, and data processor.

Mr. Hoffman is grateful to The University of Akron for giving him the opportunity to earn two college degrees and build a successful career. His affinity for the University and belief in the importance of higher education led him to establish this endowed scholarship.

Recipients of The Hoffman Family Scholarship must be a resident of Summit County in the state of Ohio and currently be enrolled as a student in or recently accepted into The College of Business. The scholarship recipient must also illustrate the need for financial assistance. The Hoffman Family Scholarship is only to be used for tuition and/or fees.
