Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Hojfeldt, Tage and Irena A. Memorial Emergency Fund

The Tage and Irena A. Hojfeldt Memorial Emergency Fund was created in July 2019 by combining two existing funds established by Mrs. Hojfeldt, '87, '90 – The Tage and Irena Hojfeldt Memorial Scholarship, which was created in May 2008 to provide support to University of Akron students in the Hospitality Management program, and The Irena A. Hojfeldt Emergency Fund for the Concert Choir and Music Students, which was created in November 2015.

The Tage and Irena A. Hojfeldt Memorial Emergency Fund will provide assistance to talented students with financial need who participate in The University of Akron School of Music’s choir ensemble or instrumental music studies.  It is hoped this assistance will allow recipients to concentrate on performance studies and to reach their full personal potential.

The Tage and Irena A. Hojfeldt Memorial Emergency Fund shall be used to assist with needs of School of Music choir participants and instrumental music students that are not covered by standard financial aid.  Eligibility to receive assistance is based on a choir participant who exhibits good voice potential or instrumental music student who exhibits good musical talent, and who:

  1. Maintains good academic standing; and
  2. Demonstrates financial hardship when obtaining books, sheet music, required performance attire, or other items that would prohibit the student from participating in the Choir or music class.  For example, the fund can be used to assist instrumental music students for academic supplies, such as the purchase of a higher quality part of a specific instrument, when the need is identified by a faculty member.

In all cases, the awards are at the discretion of both the director of the School of Music and the director of Choral Activities at The University of Akron.  The amount and number of awards will vary, depending on available funds and the needs of qualified students.
