Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Wang, Siming-Baomei Zhao Student Enrichment Fund

The Siming Wang-Baomei Zhao Student Enrichment Fund was established in May 2015 in memory of Siming Wang and in honor of her daughter, Baomei Zhao, a professor of social work in the College of Health Professions at The University of Akron. The fund provides an annual award of $500 or 5 percent of the principal of the fund (whichever is greater) to a student pursuing an enriching educational experience, such international travel to attend conferences, or research or scholarly studies in the United States or abroad. The student will be chosen upon the recommendation of Dr. Zhao, with assistance from the Director of the School of Social Work. No later than six months following the completion of the educational experience, the selected student shall present a written report and make an oral presentation in a forum determined by Dr. Zhao. Should no monies be granted as described above in any two-year period, the fund shall be closed, and money remaining in the fund shall revert to the operating budget of the School of Social Work.

The Siming Wang-Baomei Zhao Student Enrichment Fund was established with initial gifts from Drs. Mark S. ’67 and Sandra K. ’67, ’68 Auburn, as well as the family and friends of Siming Wang. Additional gifts are welcome.
