Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Columbiana County Incoming Freshman Scholarship

The Columbiana County Incoming Freshman Scholarship was established in April 2019 by an anonymous donor, who is interested in helping students at their alma mater, The University of Akron.

The fund is the donor’s way of giving back to their small community, honor their family and say “thank you” for the community’s support.  The fund will support the further education of high school students, prepared and committed to making significant contributions back to their community.  The establishment of this scholarship demonstrates support for a small community dedicated to continued education and community service.

The Columbiana County Incoming Freshman Scholarship shall be awarded annually, as funds are available, to a deserving, full-time University of Akron incoming freshman.  Selection will be based on academic merit, dedication to community and strong personal values.  Recipients must have graduated from a Columbiana County high school, with first consideration given to Leetonia High School graduates.  Consideration will also be given to students pursuing a business-related degree and/or who demonstrate financial need or other circumstances showing barriers to furthering their education.

The Department of Development will request applications from the Office of Student Financial Aid to present to the donor for review and make recommendations.  The University Scholarship Committee will make final selection.  In the event the donor is unable to or no longer desires to review applications, recipient selection shall be made by the University Scholarship Committee.
