Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Owen Family Scholarship in Nursing

Summit County residents Steve and Sherryl Owen and their children made the decision to establish a family scholarship in the College of Nursing. Many of the members of the Owen family are alumni of The University of Akron. Family members Sherryl Owen, Amy (Owen) Abernathy, and Stephanie (Owen) Jabbour graduated from the College of Nursing. Nick Abernathy and Steve are graduates of the College of Business Administration. The University of Akron has played a major role in all their lives, and it is their wish to establish a scholarship to assist local students in need.

To be eligible for The Owen Family Scholarship in Nursing, students must be accepted into the College of Nursing and be in their junior or senior year, attend The University of Akron full time, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to graduates of Cuyahoga Falls High School or surrounding area. It is the Owen family's intention for the recipient to maintain the award on a yearly basis once awarded until graduation, given the student maintains good standing within the College of Nursing. The award recipients and the amount of the annual award will be determined by the Owen family in collaboration with the College of Nursing.
