Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Miller, John Eric Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The John Eric Miller Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established at The University of Akron in 2018 by co-workers, family and friends to celebrate John’s life, his accomplishments, friendship and service.  In John Eric Miller’s 28 years of life he achieved high academic honors, but more importantly was known as a man of honor.  John went the extra mile, sharing his time and friendship with his professional colleagues, as well as with family members and others.

John Eric Miller graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from The University of Akron in 2015.  He began working on co-op assignment with AECOM (formerly URS) in 2013, and was hired full-time after graduation as Transportation Engineer within AECOM’s Akron, Ohio office.  John worked diligently as a roadway design engineer on a variety of transportation projects, both locally and throughout the Midwest region.  He was known as a technical roadway expert throughout the region and was highly sought after when production teams were being established.  Everyone who came in contact or worked side-by-side with John immediately recognized his character and willingness to help others.  His co-workers considered him a friend and cared for him deeply.  Many said they felt better for having known John.

John was dedicated to his community and church, where he served as a worship leader. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend to many.  John was known as a kind soul who was always willing to help friends and colleagues.

This scholarship is intended to honor John’s lifelong commitment to serving his community and his professional passion in creating a better environment.  John enjoyed mentoring younger engineers and guiding them through new tasks.  This scholarship continues John’s passion towards mentoring and for helping younger up-and-coming professionals.

The John Eric Miller Memorial Endowed Scholarship shall be awarded each year, as funds are available, to a civil engineering student(s) at The University of Akron.  Recipient selection will be made by the College of Engineering Civil Engineering Department.
