Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Read, Sally D. Student Success Award

The Sally D. Read Student Success Award at The University of Akron was established in 2017 by Roger T. Read '63, '66, as a tribute to Sally Read's life-long kindness in helping people in need. Described as having a servant's heart, Mrs. Read has always found time for others, showing her compassion in selfless ways. The award was revised in November 2021 from The Sally D. Miller Student Success Award to The Sally D. Read Student Success Award as Sally and Roger married in December 2020. This special fund was also established in memory of Roger and Sally's late beloved spouses, Judith A. Read '63, and C. Raymond Miller '51.

Recipients of The Sally D. Read Student Success Award will be recommended on an as-needed basis by Mrs. Read, or her designee, from candidates identified by »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ faculty or staff members. Final selection will be made without restriction as to race, color, creed, sex or national origin by the University Scholarship Committee.

Successful candidates should demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, financial need, character, and commitment to professional development. Candidates may be either full-time or part-time University of Akron students taking at least six (6) credit hours or more.

The selected recipient(s) may use the award for other education or professional development purposes; however, distribution for such purposes may be as a reimbursement to the recipient(s) with presentation of a receipt or receipts, or as payment made on recipient's behalf.
