When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Students who want to apply for scholarships should visit the scholarship page on the Financial Aid site. You can find the link for the online application here.

The Department of Development does not accept applications for or distribute scholarships. Scholarships are distributed through the University’s Office of Student Financial Aid.

Allen, Larry W. Scholarship for Engineering Excellence

This scholarship was established in November, 2009 by Mr. Larry W. and Susan Allen to assist deserving engineering students as they pursue an undergraduate degree from The University of Akron.

Larry W. Allen received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from The University of Akron in 1970 and was a member of Tau Beta Pi, engineering honor society and the Student Chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AICHE).

In February 2009, Larry retired from Air Products and Chemicals Inc. (Allentown, PA) as Vice President of Environmental, Health, Safety and Quality. Throughout his 30-year career with the company, Larry successfully held a broad range of managerial positions in manufacturing, process technology, product management, quality and sales. Among his achievements, in 1992, he was named the first-ever director for Air Product’s European operations (located in Manchester England) in chemicals manufacturing. In this role, he was instrumental in deploying the Company’s environmental, health and safety processes and modernizing its operations.

He has been married Susan Allen since 1969. The couple has two adult children – Julie and Michael.

The Larry W. Allen Scholarship for Engineering Excellence is to be awarded to an undergraduate student of any engineering discipline offered at The University of Akron. The recipient should demonstrate an exceptional work ethic, outstanding leadership in both the classroom and community and an extraordinary dedication to engineering. The recipient must also offer a 3.0 grade point average or better. The scholarship funds are to be applied to tuition and fees only. A recipient is to be determined by the College of Engineering scholarship committee.
