Non-Profit Internship Program Fund

The Non-Profit Internship Program Fund was created in April 2015 by a College of Business Administration (CBA) Honors student, Alexander J. Shannon, at The University of Akron. Shannon is a 2015 graduate with a bachelor of science in accounting.

Shannon recognized business students were unable to receive compensation for non-profit sector internship experiences. As a result, he created The Non-Profit Internship Program Fund to award to students gaining experience with non-profit organization partners of The University of Akron College of Business.

The Non-Profit Internship Program Fund will provide students with financial support during their internship experience. Selected candidates must provide written documentation confirming their internship hours and enrollment for the CBA Internship Course. The number of funded students and the fund dollar amounts will be determined each year. The funds provided to student participants will be made directly to the student and will not be included as part of any other financial aid package.

Donated funds for The Non-Profit Internship Program Fund will offer support to selected candidates. Potential candidates must be enrolled full time at The University of Akron, admitted to the CBA, and majoring in business.

Potential candidates must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 and are required to submit a one-page essay expressing their internship interest in the non-profit sector to the coordinator of internships.

A Selection Committee comprised of the CBA assistant dean and coordinator of internships will select recipients. The Committee will consider the following factors:

  • Candidate's ability to complete a 240-hour internship with a non-profit partner;
  • Candidate's ability to enroll in three-credit hour Internship Course at »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥;
  • Financial need;
  • Credit hours completed; and
  • Cumulative GPA, along with a review of the potential candidate's individual situation.

Selected candidates will receive one-half of funds at the end of the seventh week of the internship. Written confirmation from the non-profit organization's internship coordinator must be submitted to the CBA coordinator of internships. Upon the completion of the remaining 120 hours, candidates will receive the remaining funds from The Non-profit Internship Program Fund.

In support of this student-led initiative to help CBA students experience a non-profit organization internship, »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ alumni Roger and Judy Read provided the initial gift for The Non-Profit Internship Program Fund. Additional gifts to support the fund are welcome. The inaugural candidate(s) will be selected to participate during the 2015 fall semester.
