Hoover, Dr. David H. Scholarship Fund
The Dr. David H. Hoover Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 to honor the memory of Dr. David H. Hoover, professor emeritus, educator, and public servant who dedicated his life and professional career to providing aid to others during emergency/crisis situations. This scholarship, created by students enrolled in the Fire Protection Technology Degree Program, was endowed in 2010 through the many gifts received from family, friends, students, and colleagues in memory of Dr. Hoover.
Dr. Hoover’s career was a vibrant demonstration to students that service to others is, indeed, virtuous. A volunteer firefighter before becoming a career firefighter, paramedic, and assistant chief, Dr. Hoover joined The University of Akron in 1981, where his impact and educational instruction were legendary.
He established and led the progression of three emergency management programs: AAS in Fire Protection Technology, a BS in emergency management, and an AAS in emergency medical services. Before retiring in 2005, Dr. Hoover taught fire protection and emergency management and was co-director of the Center for Emergency Management and Homeland Security Policy Research.
Dr. Hoover received an associate degree in fire protection, bachelor's degree in technical education, and a master's degree in urban studies from The University of Akron. A PhD in urban studies was received from Union Institution in Cincinnati. He co-authored several books and served as director of Disaster Readiness for the American Red Cross of Greater Columbus.
The Dr. David H. Hoover Scholarship Fund recognizes Dr. and Mrs. Hoover’s commitment to The University of Akron and the value of the education they received as students. The scholarship will be awarded to students enrolled in The University of Akron Fire Protection Program or Emergency Management Program. The Dr. David H. Hoover Scholarship Fund will be selected by the academic program in cooperation with the Office of Student Financial Aid at The University of Akron.
