Alber Family Endowed Scholarship

The Alber Family Endowed Scholarship was established at The University of Akron in 2008 (and revised in 2016) by Kenneth L. and Michelle Alber in recognition of the value they place on higher education. The scholarship supports undergraduate civil or construction engineering students, with a preference for those who demonstrate a commitment to academic studies and community service. The scholarship’s original name was The Alber Family Scholarship for Civil and Construction Engineering.

Ken earned his Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from The University of Akron in 1982. While at »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥, he was active with the Lambda Chi Fraternity. He valued the beyond-the-classroom experiences gained from his fraternity’s community service programs and established enduring friendships with his fraternity brothers. Ken also holds an MBA from The University of Phoenix.

Ken has enjoyed a distinguished career in civil engineering and commercial building, including his venture in 2000 as founding partner of the PENTA Building Group. Today, PENTA Building Group is among the top 200 companies of general contractors in the country. Based in Las Vegas, the company also has operations in California and Arizona. PENTA Building Group partners with The University of Akron in providing both cooperative education and full-time employment opportunities to College of Engineering students.

Ken and Michelle have four children – Ryan, Lauren, Brandon, and Chaston – and are avid fans of the Browns, Indians, and Buckeyes. The couple enjoys catching games whenever the Ohio-based teams travel west.

The Alber Family Endowed Scholarship provides an annual undergraduate scholarship to a deserving civil or construction engineering student who demonstrates outstanding personal characteristics, including a strong work ethic, a dedication to engineering, and a commitment to community service. The recipient will be an incoming or returning student with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
