Pogue, Richard W. Presidential Scholarship

Richard W. Pogue has always been a man of quiet voice whose purpose speaks loudly and with great impact. His longstanding support for higher education and the power to transform lives led him to establish The Richard W. Pogue Presidential Scholarship in 2021. Mr. Pogue, a graduate of Cornell University and The University of Michigan, is senior advisor to the Cleveland law firm of Jones Day. He joined the firm in 1957, was named a partner four years later and served as Managing Partner from 1984 through 1992. Throughout that time, his goal of advancing the interests of Clevelanders, and Ohioans, has always been a driving force.

Mr. Pogue served as a member of the University of Akron Board of Trustees from 2004 – 2015 and as its chairman from 2012 to 2015. He received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from The University of Akron in 2014 and, has an extensive public service career that has bettered the national standing of Ohio. He served as chairman of the boards of The Cleveland Foundation, the Cleveland Ballet, Cleveland’s Bicentennial Commission, the (Ohio) Governor’s Commission on Higher Education & the Economy, Greater Cleveland Growth Association, University Hospitals Health System, Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education, The City Club, Business Volunteers Unlimited, The Kulas Foundation, Cleveland Institute of Music and the Greater Cleveland Roundtable.

The Richard W. Pogue Presidential Scholarship will be awarded annually to incoming first-year, high achieving, middle income, students who are residents of Ohio. Students must be enrolled full-time and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher to be eligible for consideration. This scholarship will be applied to tuition, fees and other fees and is renewable, up to eight semesters (four years). Recipients will be selected by the University Scholarship Committee.
