Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Acus, Dr. Raymond and Julie Endowed Fund

The Dr. Raymond and Julie Acus Endowed Fund was established in 2019 by Dr. Raymond W. Acus, III, and his wife, Julie L. Acus.  Julie, a 1994 University of Akron College of Business Administration graduate, and Raymond, serve as health professionals with the University’s Department of Athletics and are generous University of Akron benefactors.

The Acuses established this fund to support various University of Akron initiatives. Both are strong believers in the value of education and they understand the University’s mission to support its student body.  As a family, they intuitively recognize hard work and grit, and place a high value on uplifting determined, driven students.  They are aware of the cost of higher education and the financial burden seeking a college degree can place on students.

This fund, from its standard endowment distribution, will be designated to strengthen several areas of priority as determined by Dr. and Mrs. Acus annually.  Dr. and Mrs. Acus will consult with the vice president of advancement, or the vice president’s designee, to determine the best use of distributed funds.  Priorities may include, but not be limited to graduate or undergraduate scholarships for students with financial need, support for the Department of Athletics, student-athlete scholarships, travel abroad scholarships, student well-being initiatives, and emergency funding for students in need.  New opportunities that may arise will also be considered by Dr. and Mrs. Acus for funding.  In the event that Dr. and Mrs. Acus are not available to consult with the vice president of advancement, use of distributed funds will be determined by the vice president of advancement.
