Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Scala Family Endowed Scholarship for Men’s Basketball

The Scala Family Endowed Scholarship for Men’s Basketball was established in 2017 by William A. “Bill” and Sally Scala to recognize the achievements of The University of Akron Men’s basketball program.

Sally and Bill take pride in serving the community and hold philanthropy as a core family value. Their generosity and support extend to organizations in Akron and beyond and include deep ties with The University of Akron, Archbishop Hoban High School, Holy Family Parish, Akron Children’s Hospital, the Interval Brotherhood Home, Hattie Larlham and others.

Sally and Bill also are longtime Zips supporters and desired to recognize the »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ men’s basketball program for its commitment to on and off court success. The men’s basketball program is a point of high achievement for the University and the Akron community. For this reason, Bill and Sally are pleased to establish a scholarship recognizing students whose passion and commitment to the community align with values cherished by the Scala Family.

Bill, a 1975 University of Akron graduate, is president of Kenmore Construction Company and currently serves The University of Akron as a member of the Board of Trustees.

The Scala Family Endowed Scholarship for Men’s Basketball will provide one scholarship annually that may be renewed, provided the recipient maintains all requirements. Consideration for the scholarship will be given to members of the Men’s basketball team who are full-time students and active volunteers. The recipient will be selected by the head coach of the Men’s Basketball team with input from a member of the Scala family and »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥’s director of athletics.
