Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of »ÆÉ«Ö±²¥ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Varley, John O. Endowed Scholarship for Engineering

The John O. Varley Endowed Scholarship for Engineering was established in 2020 by University of Akron alumnus John Varley.

Mr. Varley earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Akron in 1986.  His rewarding career in the design of building mechanical systems allowed him to enjoy a rich and fulfilling life. Mr. Varley attributes much of his success to the credentials he earned from The University of Akron, as Akron instills a work ethic in its students and emphasizes the application of engineering principles – two values that distinguish Akron engineering graduates from others.  This scholarship will assist local students in gaining the same advantages he enjoyed.

The John O. Varley Endowed Scholarship for Engineering shall be awarded annually, as funds are available, to University of Akron undergraduate students in the College of Engineering, who are in good academic standing. First consideration shall be given to U.S. citizens and graduates from Summit County (Ohio) high schools.  Additional consideration shall be given to students interested in the design of building mechanical systems (e.g. HVAC, plumbing and fire protection). Recipient selection shall be made by the College of Engineering.
